Hospitals, Doctors, Dentists & Pharmacies

Among the concerns and frequent questions on traveler's minds are, "What happens if I get sick? Can I get my medicine?" First of all, allow me to make a suggestion. If you are taking medication, plan to have more than enough medication with you for the duration of your trip. As a precaution, you may want to have your doctor give you a prescription to take along just in case you loose your medication. It will alleviate the panic feeling. Depending on your illness and if you are traveling alone, you may want to keep a notice or medical tag in your purse or wallet indicating your illness. Upon arrival at your hotel, inform them of your illness and ask if there is a recommended doctor who is available for "House calls."

Since the island represents two countries and two different cultures, there are medical centers for each side. Each medical center is fully staffed with qualified trained personnel and can generally handle most medical problems that may occur; but, if a serious operation is required, many people go to Curacao, Guadeloupe, France, Holland or the USA.

On the Dutch side, the St. Maarten Medical Center, 011.599.543.1111, is a modern fairly new complex located at Cayhill, which is on the outskirts of Philipsburg. The Ambulance service can be reached at 542.2111. On the French side, the Hospital, 011.590.590.29.57.45, is located in the center of Marigot and the Ambulance service can be reached at 87.86.25 (day) or 87.72.00 (night). There are also more than a dozen medical clinics around the island.

There are almost 100 Dutch and French island doctors listed in the telephone directory found in most hotel rooms. Included are general practitioners; ear, nose, throat specialists; pediatricians; podiatrists; radiologists; psychiatrists; psychologists, and more. Nurses are also listed. St. Maarten is also home to the American University of the Caribbean, which graduates new doctors each year. Dentists are also in abundance and approximately 20 are listed in the directory. Last, but not least, Pharmacies are also in abundance on the island. So, don't worry about what to do if you have an emergency. The island can handle your pharmaceutical, medical, and dental needs. Enjoy yourself and have a wonderful vacation!
