| If you are calling a residential or business phone
on the Dutch side from the USA, you must dial 011.599 plus the
seven-digit number. Example: 011.599.542.2337. This is the number
of the Dutch Tourism office. If you are calling a residential or business phone on the French side from the USA, you must dial 011.590.590 plus the six-digit number. Example: 011.590.590.87.57.21. This is the number of the French Tourism office. When on island and calling the opposite side, there are fewer numbers to dial. So, ask your hotel or telephone provider how to call the other side. However, if you are calling the island from most countries in Europe you would be dialing 00 instead of 011 to get out of the country (such as France, Holland, Germany and others). So from France, you would dial 00.599.542.2337 to get the Dutch side Tourism office. Have a cell phone? Two telephone companies on St. Maarten can set up your cell phone with a local number. You can then use your cell phone for local calls on both sides of the island or to call or receive phone calls from the States. One is East Caribbean Cellular (www.EastCaribbeanCellular.com), which is located in Philipsburg and can be reached at 011.599.542.2100. The other is St. Maarten Telephone Company known as TelCell, which is also located in Philipsburg and can be reached at 011.599.542.4155. Each assigns you a local telephone number. ECC requires a credit card, which they bill after you leave the island. But, TelCell sells $10 & $20 pre-paid phone cards, which you use with your cell phone for lower rates. Incoming calls are free. By the way, you can also rent cell phones by the day or the week. |
